Keep Children From Being Swept Away

By Administrator | July 5, 2006

I am on vacation in South Carolina. Today’s paper has an account of a fisherman who yesterday was swept out to sea and drowned. He was taking a break from fishing, went out onto the rocks where the inlet and ocean met. Apparently he wanted to cool off and wash off. Somehow he slipped and was swept out to sea.

This area is well known for such drownings. There are several every year. The dangers are obvious. Wet rocks, occasional waves and the strong current come together to make a recipe for disaster, yet every day fishermen take the chance and walk out on the rocks. It could be ignorance, though anyone fishing there should know of the dangers. Perhaps it is a matter of convenience. It takes a few minutes to walk out to the beach area. Perhaps it is an attitude of “no one will tell me what I can and can’t do!”

I wonder what drives some people to take chances. Every day fishermen take chances on that inlet. In a similar manner, everyday parents take chances with the upbringing of their children. Parents who sit idly by and allow the influences of our modern culture erode innocence and childhood take serious chances. For some, it may be ignorance. But like the ignorant fishermen, honestly, they should have known better. Some want to take the convenient path. After all it is easier to allow children to engage with the culture unfettered. It takes loads of work to investigate those movies, shows, games and songs. For other parents there is an attitude of “no one will tell me what to do.”

Just like the fishermen, some children will survive despite the chances their parents take. Unfortunately, some children will be swept away by the dangerous culture. Some will find themselves addicted to gambling, alcohol, pornography, lost to worldly philosophies, etc. Are you willing to take the chance? As Christians we are called to teach the commands of the Lord to our children. (See Duet. 6, II Tim. 3:15Open Link in New Window) But more than teaching, we need to protect our children. God warns against those who allow little ones to be offended. (Luke 17:2Open Link in New Window) Scripture clearly states that we should avoid being captivated by the philosophies of the world. (Colossians 2:8Open Link in New Window) How can we keep our children safe without setting clear Loving Limits? Find out more about Loving Limits by downloading my free book: Loving Limits Book.
