Time Thieves

By mstrohm | June 21, 2007

Unlike a thief who sneaks into your home while you are not around, the common thefts of time are usually invited in by each of us! In many cases these thieves are bragged about and coveted by others. Here are a few select thieves. This list does not cover all the thieves not is it a list of the most common ones. It is a list that Ellen and I struggle with. You may have some others.

Poor Planning. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Having a plan for your family can save precious time and maximize efforts freeing up valuable moments for your loved ones.

Commitments. Think about what you are committing to. Even the “good” commitments. Will it matter tomorrow? Will it matter five years from now? Will it matter for all of eternity?

Media. The pervasive presence of media acts as a wall blocking communication between you and your family even when sitting in the same room. Everywhere you turn this wall of distraction blocks good interaction and depletes time.

Wrong Priorities. Too much emphasis on getting ahead, having the perfect yard or house or a desire to have the right “look” all consume precious time. Adjusting inappropriate priorities will free up time spent shopping, primping, over grooming, cleaning, working late for selfish gain, etc.

“Lost, yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone forever.”
Horace Mann

Let me encourage you to take a moment and think about where your time is going. In your prayers decide if you are spending your precious limited commodity of seconds the way God wants you to. If not begin to adjust your priorities and spend some of that valuable time with God and your family!

May God’s grace and peace be with you,
Mark and Ellen Strohm
